英語ちょびっと日記

国際結婚をしていながら、英語に自信がなくなってきています。 最近、子供も大きくなってきたし、学校に入りなおそうと思っているこのごろ、少しでも毎日英語で文章をかけたらなあと思ってがんばります!

Depressing fact.. Can't trust Japanese Massmedia

Recently, I became very interested in Takeshima issue. What is Takeshima ?
The U.S news are reproting that Japanese people are not interested in Takeshima (Liancourt Rocks) like Koreans do. I was wondering what ? because I didn't know anything about it. Of course, I wasn't interested in the politics just like other Japanese people, but that made me start resarching about these islands. I will just omit the issue here, because it would become very long if I explain here. Please check it here http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%AB%B9%E5%B3%B6_(%E5%B3%B6%E6%A0%B9%E7%9C%8C)!
About 4000 Japanese fisherman were caught by Korean police and about 40 people got killed because they only got to close to Takeshima to catch fish... Japanese goverment made complaints to Korea..
Is that it ? As I understand after the resach, I am pretty sure that this island belongs to Japan. but now Korea invaded this island by force, and killed those Japanese fishermen... Why Japanese goverment don't do anything to protect Japanese citizens ? Why we didn't know anything about this island till now ? even though I wasn't that interested those political things, it is very awkward that I didn't even knew about this..
There are lots of information about this Takeshima issue on internet. But Japanese TVs, or newspapers are not reporting those facts, and informations at all. Why ? They seems like that they are not doing so on purpose... Now I am confused.. It is not that we are not interested.. we are not interested because we don't know about it!, On the other hand, Koreans have been educated that Takeshima is theirs since they were small. They even have a song for it, and make little kids in the kindergarten sing about it. Of course, if I know that fact, then I would be much care about this issue, and I am now.
Then, this was a good chance for me to study about Japanese history again. When I check the internet, I am finding lots of unpleasantt things that Japanese massmedia did, and are doing.
First, I study about "Comfort women" issue. I thought that this "comfort women" was really happened, and was proved that was happened. . Everytime, I hear why Japanese people don't apologized for it.. Japan are so bad, worthless, etc..
I thought " yeah, right. why we don't admit, and apologize.". but when I reseach it, I found out that this wasn't proved that was really happened. There were Korean prostitutes, but there are no evidences found that those women were forced to be ones. They are in controversy issue now...Only thing that they say that the proof was the reports from some of ex-comfort women's stories, but those don't make sense...
Wait a minutes, then, why Japanese prime minister apologized ? without evidences ? Why we were educated that this thing was truly happened even though it was still in controvercy?
That is lots to do with Japanese Massmedia. They don't broadcast everthing. they pick up the things that they want to broadcast, Some of them are faking articles (those fakes are proved )and broadcasting to nations. They tended to broadcast on behalf of N Korea, and S.Korea, and China. The things that are not benefits for those countires, they ignore them, and not broadcast. Why ? Those are Japanese newspapers! Why they broadcast not for our country of Japan ?
Well, some say, because lots of Zainich who are Koreans in Japan involved in these newspapers and control the reports, and some say they are receiving money for it.
It was very shocked to find out, but those all make sense to me now. Now we have internet, we can get the information that Japanese massmedia wouldn't broadcast.
We have been mind-contorolled by those massmedia, and they planted us self-battered thoughts. Can you imagine that I didn't even know Chinese and Koreans hate us ? Am I dumm ?. Because I wasn't taught about it.. I just want to ask those massmedia people.. Did you get enough money to betray your own country ?

Kid's Japanese Skill

Our kids' Japanese skills are not that great compared to other Japanese kids at the same ages. My son still speaks like a little baby and mumbles lots.
He used to talk like a little girl as well, since he talked with women for the most of the time, me, and the kindergarten teachers.. There were no men speaking Japanese to him. ( His father doesn't speak Japanese) But last year when we had a chance to stay in Japan for a year, he had a lots of chances to talk with his grandpa, his friends, and listening to all kinds of TV programs. His Japanese has adjusted more masculine way. My mother caught him saying "Ore" to his friends a couple of times..
Also he mastered the Hakata direct as well. ( So cute!!). but sadly he has already forgotton it
My daugher.. She still hasn't quite reached to the level of the average Japanese girls' speaking yet. I was sort of worry to put my daughter into Japanese public school during our stay of Japan.
Although she has been to Japanse school for a year in London, I still had to give her extra lessons at home after school to make up for her delay . Also, I was very anxious how my daughter will be treated in the school. (I was hearing lots of rummors about Ijimes before we came back to Japan).
But there were nothing to worry about. She made lots of friends. Teachers, and friends accepted her nicely and easily. ( Thanks for that!)
It tooks some time for me to get used back to Japanese systems as well. Because I got used to pick the kids up and drop them off at schools every day in London, I was too scare to let kids go to school by their own. Of course, my son was still in a kindergarten, I had to bring him to the kindergarten, but my daugher was already in an elementary school, where no parents assistances were needed to go.
But I kept walking with her to the school in the morning, and brought her back after school for... 3 to 4 months ?
Then, she started making friends....Her friends came to pick her up at home, went to school in the morning and came back together after the school..
I finally even accepted for her to go off after the school to play with her friends in the park.
but I never felt secure till she came back home.

To be continued..

My kids English

Today is the third day since they started their summer vacation.
My son graduated from his English Kindergarten and Japanese kindergarten this summer.
We had some cerebrations for both of them.
My son went to American school for the first time this year, and he had changed 3 Japanese schools since he started and finished it, one in London, one in Japan, and the other in the U.S. All of them were Japanese schools. I wonder which one he liked the best. He easily adjusted to each one of them very well. When he went back to Japan last year for a year. His Japanese wasn't that good, even though he was in all day Japanese school for a couple years in London. But he started absorbing all those Japanese words, and vocaburary so quickly, even I was quite amazed by it.
And then, Now here we are in the U.S. At the beginning of his return to the U.S, he couldn't even communicate his own father quite yet, then something started clicking in his mind.. Ringo..ringo.. an apple !
hmmm... Isu.. isu.. chair! just like that.. Well, still in our household, we speak mixed English and Japanese.. Children start making conversation with me ( and each other) in Japanese, then my husband make some comments or raise questions, they answer back in English, back and forth..
Of course, my husband is not really good at Japanese, sometimes I have to step in to translate.. ( I hate this !!)
My son's English ability is raising so fast.. His brain is still soft and could absorb things as the same as English speakers. do.. compare to this. My daughter who is already 9 years old, is having hard time to absorb English. Her brain is already set up with Japanese. Although she is familiar with English (Of course, her father has been speaking English to her since she was born) we never corrected her English or forced her to learn English. We tried once to teach her English, then she simply resisted... but we didn't do anything much about it, because we thought that English will come around as long as she lives in English speaking country, and we still pretty much believe so. Also we didn't want her to stop expressing herself worrying about how she spoke. But this got to go now! So I let both kids leave to my husband for learning English. but. it works for my son, but not to my daughter.. Of course, pronunciations are still better to hear from my husband.. but others.. well I have to teach my daughter with Japanese way like how I learned English.. using Romaji, practice of English words, explaining the composition in Japanese..
For example, my daughter often forgets to put "s"es after plural nouns just like Japanese people do. On the other hand, my son never forgets them..not like he is thinking about them, he just naturally simply does it. Also, he is not embrassed by his English When I hear him talking to his friend, I can't stop feeling to want to go over there, and help him his friends to understand him.. But who cares ?American kids at that age make mistakes as much as well... so he just goes up, and talks to people, so he could make friends easily. but my daughter.. I could tell that she knows that her English is not that great, so she hesitates to talk to people.
So, I would say "Shyness" and "embrassed by your English" are the worst elements not be able to improve your English or any kinds of languages.
Of course, their age difference is contributing lots to this situations as well. But I still would say people who are not shy, and actively having relationship with others have great improvements towards foreign languages.
That is my conclusion watching my kids and others..
What do you think ?

I am so lazy to study English..

English..
when I started studying English in Junior high school, I was taking English lessons " Juku" after the school on the side.
This helped me lots to get high scores on English tests in the school... You know, there are not so much to study about at the beginning of English lessons.
And then, I just had a difficult time to go to school.. at that time, I stop studying English as well.
Somehow, my old dream towards English start acting up in my mind, I managed to retrieve my ambition towards this language.
But this didn't fix my lazyness of studying it. I just went through all of the problems and tests, and other related things without studying hard for it. They weren't perfect.. but good enough.. Can you tell by reading my English blog? Well, I am surviving to live here... and manage to do all sort of things here. So, I guess that is good enough for me for now.
It has been almost 10 or 15 years since I checked some words against a dictionary or text books.. (Well, I sometimes make easy seaches by using English-English dectionary on the website, or using my husband as " a human dictionary" )
But I have enough pride that I'd better good at English since I am living in abroad for so many years.. I needed to have some proofs for that.
Last year, I took Test called " Eiken Jun I kkyu" (Well, 1 kyu was too hard. Although I never took one before, I just gave up even trying one.)
I didn't study at all.. well I bought one text book, and did it a week before the test. Somehow, I managed to pass it. That's why I am still lazy...
If I had failed it, I know it would hurt my pride.
Now I am thinking to go back to collage to study "finance". This time, I will surely participate, and work hard to get knowleges that I want!!. It won't be any suffers to spend time to study things that I turly want to study ..
I might try to take a test " Jun 1 kyu " when I finish my collage course.

Which English do you like better ? American or British ? (2)

Well, continue from the last blog..
I thought that British peopole use more complicated English than American as well.
Like some of my British colleagues used to tell me " Have you eaten lunch ?"
Well yes.. Do you have to use the complicated tense ??
In the U.S people simply say, " Did you eat lunch already ?"
Amercans do use those present perfect tenses, but when you just ask about things just happened right before, they simplify sentences.. ( well, it will be complicated if I continue to discuss about this composition things, so I'd better stop now)
As my children were attending all-day Japanese schools, I took them to some English pre-school programs a few days a week. They sung songs, danced, and played some music instruments.
Unfortnately, British English didn't quite settle in their brains..
But now I cleary distinguish British English from American English and others as well.
Irish English is the worst one to figure out what they saying for me.
They have very thick accent. but I am better figuring those out now than before.
